Kids Dental in Canning Vale
Setting Canning Vale families up with great oral hygiene habits for life.

Setting up children with healthy oral hygiene habits and ensuring they attend regular dental check-ups throughout childhood is key to good oral health later in life.
That's often easier said than done — which is why our Canning Vale team keeps things kind, patient and fun. Kids are welcomed into a friendly, relaxed practice with a basket of toys and books, plus colouring sheets and pencils to keep them entertained while they wait. Every child who visits us also goes home with a goodie bag — a toothbrush, their favourite character toothpaste, and reward stickers — so a trip to the dentist becomes something to look forward to, not dread.
We also bulk bill eligible dental services under the government's Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), so cost doesn't have to stand between your child and the care they need.
Ultimately, it's all about keeping kids' teeth healthy and setting them up for life.
What is kids' dental?
A lot of adult dental anxiety starts with one bad childhood experience. So at Ranford Road Dental Centre, our whole approach for younger patients is built around making that first visit, and every visit after it, something they don't dread.
That means a toy basket and colouring sheets in the waiting area, favourite-character toothpaste and a toothbrush to take home, and a laminated take-home sheet (with a photo, if Mum or Dad wants one) so the visit feels like an event, not a chore. It sounds small, but for a lot of Canning Vale families with kids at Ranford Primary, Canning Vale Primary or Excelsior Primary just up the road, it's the difference between a child who's happy to come back and one who fights you at the door.
How a kids’ dental visit works?
Every child is different, so we don't run a one-size-fits-all script. Generally:
- The dentist introduces themselves and takes time to chat with your child before anything else happens — building trust comes first
- You're welcome to stay in the room the whole time
- For younger children, we'll ask you a bit about their habits and health at home
- A gentle oral exam follows, with an x-ray for kids over five if needed
- The whole thing rarely takes more than half an hour
- If your child gets upset, we stop and give them the time they need — there's no rush on our end
Afterwards, they pick a goodie bag on the way out. Most kids leave more excited than when they walked in.

Why should you start your children’s dentistry early?
Baby teeth matter more than a lot of parents realise - they hold the space for adult teeth and set the pattern for a lifetime of oral hygiene habits.
Getting kids comfortable with the dentist early, in a practice they actually like, means fewer cavities, less anxiety, and a much easier time as adult teeth come through.
How much does kids' dental cost?
The cost of a standard children’s check-up will vary in price just as adult treatments do. If you go to a specialist paediatric dentist rather than a standard dentist who offers children’s dentistry, you may be charged extra.
For children who are eligible for Medicare, and receive at least one additional benefit, they may be eligible for CDBS. CDBS benefits and payments can be used to pay for specified treatments at a private dentist. CDBS provides $1,158 in benefits to be used over two consecutive calendar years, for basic dental services inclusive of dental examinations, x-rays, cleaning, fissure sealing, fillings, and extractions.
If you are eligible for CDBS, you will be able to use your benefits and make an appointment immediately with our team.
Everything parents want to know before their child's dental visit
We bulk bill eligible services under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) - most Australian families with a child aged 0–17 qualify for up to $1,158 in benefits over two years, at no out-of-pocket cost.

How can I look after my child’s dental health at home?
Good habits at home matter as much as what happens in the chair. A few things we tell Canning Vale parents:
- The dentist will introduce themselves and chat with your child to help them feel at ease
- You're welcome to stay in the room throughout the appointment
- For younger kids, we'll ask you a few questions about their health and habits at home
- The dentist performs a gentle oral examination — for children over five, this may include an x-ray
- The visit won't take much more than 30 minutes
- Afterwards, we'll give you a laminated take-home sheet noting the key details from the visit, and invite Mum or Dad to take a photo of your child to go with it
- Before you leave, your child picks out a goodie bag with a toothbrush, their favourite character toothpaste and reward stickers
- If your child gets upset or scared, we'll pause and give them time to settle — there's no rush

Frequently asked questions
Children can begin to see a regular or paediatric dentist from around the age of one, or when their first tooth comes through if that happens sooner. Your dentist will advise you on when to come back for the next appointment, which could be six months or up to a year.
Baby teeth do so much more than just hold space. They help children eat, speak, smile confidently, and guide adult teeth into the right positions.
Losing them too early through decay or infection can affect how adult teeth come through - and can increase the likelihood of orthodontic problems down the track.
Some children may be anxious leading up to their dental appointment. You can reassure your child by talking about the visit positively, showing excitement, and talking about why it’s so important for their health.
Parents should assist their children by brushing their teeth from when the first tooth appears.
Most parents are surprised to learn that children can't brush their own teeth effectively until around 8 years old - so until then, mum or dad really do need to be involved every morning and night.
Parents are an important part of the whole experience as children take their cues from the people they trust most - so a relaxed parent makes a huge difference.
We recommend bringing your child along to your own appointment first, so they can see that it's safe and completely normal.
Both are qualified dental professionals who are great with kids. An oral health therapist focuses on preventive care and routine treatments like check-ups, cleans and fillings — they're who you'll typic
A paediatric dentist is a specialist with additional postgraduate training, usually referred to for more complex cases. For most children, an oral health therapist or general dentist is the perfect fit.
If it's a baby tooth: don't try to reinsert it. Call your practice as soon as possible so they can check for any damage to the surrounding area.
If it's a permanent tooth: this is a dental emergency, act quickly. Pick the tooth up by the crown (not the root) and rinse gently. Call your practice immediately and head straight in.
