Composite vs Emax porcelain veneers

We offer both composite and porcelain (Emax) veneers, and which one's right for you comes down to your budget, timeline and what you're trying to fix:

Composite veneers are built up directly onto your tooth in a single visit, using a tooth-coloured resin shaped and bonded chairside. They're the faster, more affordable option, and work well for minor chips, cracks, small gaps and general colour correction.

Emax porcelain veneers are our go-to for a longer-lasting, higher-durability result. Emax offers superior strength compared to traditional porcelain — each veneer is built from micro-thin layers of ceramic, which makes it more resistant to everyday wear without compromising how natural it looks. Because the finished veneer is thinner than a conventional one, less of your natural tooth needs to be altered to fit it. Porcelain veneers are the better choice for larger cosmetic corrections and more significant misalignment.

Who veneers are for

Veneers can be a good option if you have:

• Tooth discolouration that hasn't responded to whitening
• Worn-down, chipped or cracked teeth
• Misaligned or uneven teeth
• Minor gaps between teeth

Veneers are a cosmetic solution. They make teeth look better, but they don't treat underlying problems.

Any decay or gum issues need to be resolved first, and veneers generally aren't suitable if you have limited enamel to bond to, untreated bruxism (grinding can chip or dislodge them), heavily restored teeth, or active gum disease.

What to expect

At your initial consultation, we'll talk through what you'd like to change about your smile, then recommend a plan — including whether composite or Emax porcelain is the better fit, and what shade suits you.

For composite veneers: minimal to no anaesthetic is usually needed. Your dentist removes a small amount of enamel to make room, then bonds and shapes the resin directly onto your tooth in a single appointment.

For Emax porcelain veneers: a thin layer of enamel is buffed away before the veneer can be bonded — we'll use local anaesthetic if you're sensitive. An impression of your prepped teeth is sent to our lab, where your Emax veneers are hand-crafted. About two weeks later, we remove your temporary veneers and bond the permanent ones in place.
